Why the name Hyssop?

For four centuries, the Israelites had been slaves in Egypt. They cried out for God to rescue them—and God sent Moses to Pharaoh with the command, “Let my people go!”

The Scriptures tell us that Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he refused. Not even the series of plagues that God sent on Egypt moved him, until the last the death of the firstborn child in every household in Egypt.

God made provision for the protection of His own people by using a common weed. The Israelites were instructed to dip a bunch of hyssop in lamb’s blood and sprinkle it on their door posts so that the angel of death would pass over their families (Exodus 12:22).

From this lowly weed we take our name, as a reminder that we are mere vessels for the power of the Lord. It is the fervent prayer of Hyssop Ministries that God will use us to spread the Blood of the Lamb to a dying world. We are weeds in His hands...and tools in the hand of the church.

Hyssop Founder's Dream

God called me in 1990 to form Hyssop Ministries, but it took almost a year before I understood His call.  Over the next three years, God molded me and gave me a passion to reach out beyond the boundaries of the local church where I was pastor.

In July of 1994, I resigned from the church where I had been pastor for almost 9 years.  We had a wonderful ministry there, but God was calling me into itinerant evangelism.  That meant I would be traveling a lot, and that was all I understood.  At the time I resigned, we had no savings and some debt.  We had no financial reserves.  I did not know what the future held, but I was confident in the One who held that future.  He has provided wonderfully.

God is so faithful.  Hyssop Ministries has grown and expanded in ways I had never imagined.  In the last 9 years, our team has conducted so many retreats and camps that I have honestly lost count.  We have hosted a youth camp in Laguna Beach, Florida.  I have written youth Bible studies that have been used by our team for many youth camps and DiscipleNow ® weekends.

In addition to the youth activities listed above, I have preached revivals in dozens of churches.  Pastors often report increased attendance and baptisms afterwards, as the church is revived and begins to minister with a fresh zeal.  On several occasions, we have seen whole churches come forward for renewal and recommitment at the end of the service.

God has opened the door for many college ministry experiences.  I have traveled across the United States ministering to college students and youth.

Through the years God has molded me and remolded me.  I do not think He is finished yet.  For the last two years He has had me working in a prison as a chaplain.  There He showed me the great need for instruction in integrity.  I wrote a curriculum on integrity for the inmates, and almost immediately had a waiting list for participants.  Within three months, a public school had heard of it, and had commissioned the revising of the curriculum for high school use.  It has now been taught to the whole student population there, and the administration has ordered Phase II.

I have now started a company to promote integrity materials to public schools and businesses.  This curriculum is not blatantly religious, so it is acceptable in a broad spectrum of people. You can view the website for it here:  http://www.theintegrityproject.com

I am in the process now of developing a whole new series of studies on integrity for churches and Christian educators, that will include Biblical references and character studies.   Come, let us build character together!
